The impact of climate change on the gross domestic product in the Republic of Yemen: Standard study using ARDL technique for the period 1990-2023

Abstract

This study aimed at identifying the impact of climate change on Yemen’s GDP over the period 1990 – 2023. To achieve the objective the study, new quantitative methods were used, depending on Autoregressive Distributed Lag model (ARDL) to identify the long and short term impact and relationship.

The main findings of the study were: first, there is a long-term cointegration relationship between carbon dioxide emissions and the use of fossil fuel energy.

While these are impendent variables indicative of climate change, GDP is a dependent variable in Yemen during the said period.  The findings indicated that carbon emission has a slight exponential and significant impact on GDP in Yemen. However, the use of fossil fuel energy has a greater exponential and significant impact on GDP in Yemen.
